The technique of implanting pigment in the skin may date back thousands of years, but the trend towards using the technique for eyebrows, eyeliner and lips is thought to have emerged in Asia within the last 25 years. Little else is known about the history of microblading. It had become the most popular method of cosmetic eyebrow tattooing in Europe and the United States by 2015, and other techniques such as powdering and shading.

Whatever the future may hold for permanent makeup, history has shown us that the tools and techniques are bound to keep evolving, and with that evolution new markets opening up. One thing is for sure, permanent makeup is very much — pardon the pun —here to stay.
